ClimaFlex Case Studies
The ClimaFlex project will test its solutions in two real pilot installations to evaluate the effectiveness of HVAC systems in providing energy flexibility. Both sites are equipped with photovoltaic systems to maximise renewable self-consumption.

Residential Pilot
Living Lab UNIZEB
Industrial Area of Padua (Italy)
Context: Represents the residential sector and is managed by the University of Padua.
Building: An experimental dwelling of approximately 80 m² located in Padua, designed to host up to three people. It is built using innovative materials such as cross-laminated timber (CLT) and polyurethane foam insulation.
System: It uses a small-scale geothermal (water-to-water) heat pump (~1.5 kWel) supplying a radiant ceiling system. The setup also includes mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) and a 6 kW photovoltaic system.
Objective: To demonstrate the feasibility of integrating existing low-capacity heat pumps into flexibility markets. Tests will measure the impact of load modulation events on overall building efficiency and, in particular, on occupants’ thermal comfort and indoor humidity conditions.

Tertiary Pilot
HiRef Facility
Tribano, Padua (Italy)
Context: Represents the tertiary (office) sector and is located at the industrial site of the partner HIREF S.p.A.
Building: The installation will control the HVAC load of a 7,600 m² office area served by a water loop system maintained at constant temperatures (17–22 °C).
System: A medium-scale (~40 kWel) innovative air-to-water heat pump prototype developed within the project will be installed in parallel with the existing primary systems. The unit uses propane as a low environmental impact natural refrigerant.
Objective: To evaluate the performance of the prototype machine, measuring key performance indicators (KPIs) such as response times, load modulation speed, and the effect of modulation on partial-load performance (COP).
